Spec accuracy and qualification policy

The Japanese spirits category has a documented history of changing spec between production runs, limited releases appearing at higher ABVs than first reported, and cask descriptions shifting between markets. We hold ourselves to explicit qualification standards:

• When sourcing specs from secondary reporting rather than official distillery documentation, we use language such as "reportedly" or "according to [source]."
• Vintage years, ABV, and cask details may change between bottling runs. We note the date of our verification: "at time of writing."
• Availability and pricing are market-dependent and change frequently. Readers should verify current availability and price per bottle before any purchase decision.
• We distinguish clearly between confirmed official releases and rumored or leaked information.

How we work

Articles are produced by the Kanpai Journal Editorial Team using AI-assisted research workflows grounded in publicly available data — auction results, distillery publications, regulatory filings, and trade-press reporting. Every article is structured around verifiable factual claims; we cite sources where possible and qualify where data is uncertain.

We believe combining systematic data aggregation with editorial oversight on accuracy and tone produces better coverage than either approach alone. This allows us to cover a wider catalog more frequently than a traditional publication of comparable size.

Editorial credentials

Our core coverage team combines formal spirits education with hands-on market research. Contributors draw on training aligned with Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) standards and sake sommelier certification programmes, and have tracked the Japanese whisky auction and secondary market continuously since 2019.
